    Worth knowing

You spend a third of your life on it

Every night, sweat and skin go through the sheets and into the mattress. That's what the yellowing on an older one actually is.

Dust mites live on it too. Harmless to most people, but their droppings are a common trigger for asthma and eczema, and a household vacuum doesn't reach far enough to help.

Sheets get washed weekly. The thing underneath usually gets nothing.

    My method

    Four steps,
    about an hour

1 I vacuum it properlyA filtered machine that holds onto the dust instead of blowing it back into the room. Seams and edges included.
2 I treat the marksSweat patches and stains get treated on their own first, so they have time to break down.
3 I clean and pull it back outHot water goes in and comes straight back out with everything it loosened. Never enough to leave it soaking.
4 I finish with a deodouriserDeals with what's left of the smell rather than covering it. It should end up smelling of nothing.

Book a morning slot and you can sleep on it that night. Four to six hours is normal, longer in cold or damp weather.

    Scope

Any size, any number of them

Top surface as standard, since that's where nearly all of it collects. Ask if you want the underside doing too.

Single Small double Double King Super king Cot and child beds

One mattress on its own is rarely worth a visit, because of the minimum call-out. Most people do the whole house at once, or have them done alongside a carpet or a sofa.

    FAQ

    The things people ask first

It depends on the size and how many. The minimum call-out is £120, so a single mattress on its own usually isn't worth the visit. Tell me what you've got and I'll give you a price before I start.

If I come in the morning, yes. Four to six hours is normal, quicker with a window open. Cold or damp weather takes longer, and I'll say so beforehand.

Recent ones often go completely. Marks that have been there for years usually fade rather than disappear. I'd rather say that up front than have you expecting a new mattress.

Yes. Everything gets rinsed back out, so there's no bleach and nothing sticky or harsh left in the mattress for anyone to sleep on.

Once a year is plenty for most people. More often if someone in the house has asthma or eczema, or for a child's bed where accidents are more likely.

    While I'm there

    Anything else needing done?

Since there's a minimum call-out, most people get the mattresses done alongside something else.
