Clear the small things off the floor and move what furniture you can manage. Anything too heavy or awkward, leave it and I'll give you a hand with it when I get there. What Kempston carpets are up against
Kempston is a town, not a village. Twenty thousand people, its own council and its own high street. It also has the odd habit of keeping its oldest parts round the outside and its newest in the middle, which is why two houses a mile apart here can need completely different jobs.
Long before the town filled in there were separate little settlements strung out around it, and the names have stuck. Box End, Church End, Green End, Wood End. Out that way you still find old farmhouses and cottages, some of them thatched, with small low rooms and a solid floor under the carpet. Nearer the middle the houses get newer the closer you get to the shops. That is the reverse of most places, so I never assume anything about a Kempston house until I have seen the floor.
When the ironworks was in full swing, streets of terraces went up for the people working there, and a good part of the older town is still those streets. Houses of that age usually have floorboards over an open void rather than a slab. That is good news for drying, because air can get at the carpet from underneath as well as above. In a lot of these houses there is a grey line round the edge of the room, tight against the skirting board, and sometimes under the doors as well. People scrub at it and decide the carpet is finished. It is not wear and nobody trod it in. It has a name in the trade and it does come out, but it is a separate step and it needs its own time.

They tend to get cleaned at check-out or not at all, so by the time anyone looks at one properly it has had several years of everything.
