What happens on the day
No surprises. Here is exactly how a carpet clean goes.
Clear the small things off the floor and move what furniture you can manage. Anything too heavy or awkward, leave it and I'll give you a hand with it when I get there. Most of Bromham is easy to park at, but if you're down at Bridge End tell me when you book. That end is tight and the bridge is not the place to be unloading a van at school time.
We look at the rooms together and I confirm the price. Nothing starts until you are happy with it. Then I set up, which takes a few minutes.
Stay in or go out, whatever suits you. Most homes take about half a day. I work room by room so you always have somewhere to sit.

What Bromham carpets are up against
Three miles out, over the old causeway. Bromham is one of the biggest villages I cover and one of the oldest, and the two halves of it give me very different jobs.
The Ouse swings round the east of the village and most of the ground between here and the bridge is flood meadow. It comes back wet for months at a time. What walks in off it is a fine silt rather than a lump of mud, and silt is sneaky. It brushes off the mat looking like nothing, then works down to the base of the pile and quietly takes the life out of the colour. Add the walk round Bromham Lake and the mill and you have most of the dirt in the average Bromham hall.
Bromham sits on limestone rather than the clay you get south of town. Bromham Lake was a limestone and gravel pit before it was a nature reserve, and that pale gritty dust gets everywhere. On a dark carpet you will never spot it. You feel it. If the pile sounds slightly crunchy when you run a hand across it, that is not the carpet wearing out, it is grit sitting in it, and grit cuts fibre every time somebody walks over it.
Most of Bromham went up after the war and over half of it is detached. That usually means an open ground floor with one carpet running from the front door through the hall and into the living room. Everyone walks the same line, so a darker path appears along it within a few years. People assume the carpet is finished. Nearly always it is soil, it is only in that one strip, and it comes out.
The A428 took the through traffic out in 1986, so the village itself is quiet now. Up on the newer roads there is usually a drive, though Stagsden Road, Woodland Drive and Grange Lane get parked up on the verges. Down at Bridge End it is narrower and the old bridge is a pinch point. Park close and the hose run is short, and a short hose means stronger suction and a carpet that dries faster.

Yes, and it's the job I do most often out here. A full ground floor is comfortably half a day, sometimes a bit more if the rooms are big. Doing it in one go is cheaper per room than picking off one at a time, and you only lose access for a single day rather than three.
Grit, and you're right to notice it. Sand and fine stone work down to the base of the pile where a vacuum can't reach, and every footstep grinds them against the fibre. That's what makes a carpet look tired long before it's actually worn. It comes out with proper agitation and real suction, and the carpet feels different underfoot afterwards.
Hours rather than days. Most of the water comes back out as I go rather than being left in the carpet. If you're down near the river and the house tends to feel damp through winter, allow a bit longer, and I'll tell you what to expect for your rooms before I start.
Take the small things off the floor if you can, and leave anything heavy. I'll move it with you when I get there. In the bigger houses out here there's usually somewhere to shift a sofa to, so it's rarely a problem.
