No surprises. Here is exactly how a carpet clean goes.
Clear the small things off the floor and move what furniture you can manage. Anything too heavy or awkward, leave it and I'll give you a hand with it when I get there. Wilstead is spread out along two roads, so give me the road name as well as the number when you book. It saves me driving the length of Bedford Road twice.
We look at the rooms together and I confirm the price. Nothing starts until you are happy with it. Then I set up, which takes a few minutes.
Stay in or go out, whatever suits you. Most homes take about half a day. I work room by room so you always have somewhere to sit.
We walk round every room together. I take all my kit with me and leave the place tidy.

I brush it in

I rinse it out
Hot water pulls the dirt and the soap straight back out. Nothing sticky is left behind.

What Wilstead carpets are up against
Five miles south on the A6, strung out along two roads with the wood on the hill behind it. There is no real village centre here, and what comes through your front door depends a lot on which end you live at.
The ground here is heavy Oxford clay. It's the same clay two brickyards in the village dug for a living, and the millennium signs are made from it. That tells you what you are dealing with. Clay doesn't drift in as dust like sand does. It arrives as a lump, dries hard, and leaves an orange-brown cast in the fibre that a vacuum will not touch. It does come out, but it needs loosening properly first rather than rubbing at with a cloth.
Wilstead Wood sits a good 150 feet above the village and it is wet and slippery through most of the year, beech on the top and tangled ground below. If you walk it, or the circular route round Northwood End and Manor Farm, you come back down the hill carrying it. Coming downhill on wet clay means more of it on the boots and more of it walked further into the house before anyone thinks to take them off.
There's a lot of single storey housing here, on the sixties estates and up at Briar Bank. In a house the stairs take the worst of the traffic and act as a sort of filter. In a bungalow there is nothing to slow it down, so the hall carpet takes everything from the front door to the kitchen. It also means a lot of carpets round here are older and have never had a proper clean, which is usually good news, because there is more to get back.
The A6 stopped running through the village in the seventies, so Bedford Road and Luton Road are quiet enough now. Most of the estate housing has a drive. It gets tighter round the school and the shops at the busy times, and Duck End and the older lanes are narrow. A space near the door means a shorter hose, and a shorter hose means better suction and a drier carpet.
Wilstead is about fifteen minutes down the A6, and there's no travel charge. Being south of the bypass doesn't cost you extra and it doesn't put you further back in the queue. I'm down that way most weeks.

It comes down to the number of rooms and the state they're in, so tell me what you need and I'll price it. The minimum call-out is £120, with nothing added for the travel. The number I give you is the number you pay.
Usually, yes. Clay sits in the pile rather than dyeing the fibre, so once it's properly loosened it lifts out. It takes more work than ordinary dirt because it binds to the fibre, but it comes. What won't shift is anything that has bleached or coloured the carpet, and I'll tell you that when I look at it rather than after I've taken your money.
Ask me before you assume it isn't. The £120 minimum covers a fair bit of floor, and most people find that once the hall, lounge and a bedroom are in, they're already there. If it genuinely doesn't add up for what you need, I'll say so.
Often more point than a newer one. Years of soil at the base of the pile is exactly what a proper clean is for, and old carpets frequently come back further than people expect. If the pile itself is worn through rather than dirty, no clean fixes that, and I'll tell you straight when I see it.
Hours rather than days. I take most of the water back out as I go instead of leaving it in the carpet. Heavy clay ground can make a house feel colder and slower to dry in winter, so I'll give you a realistic estimate for your rooms before I start.
