    My method

    How I clean
    your sofa

    Gentler than carpet, and slower. Fabric can shrink or mark if it gets too wet, so it needs a different touch.

    1 I test the fabricI try a small amount on a hidden patch, round the back or under a cushion, and wait. If it doesn't take it well, I stop and tell you.
    2 I vacuum it outCrumbs, hair and dust come out of the seams and down the sides first, before anything wet goes near it.
    3 I treat the marksArms, headrests and seat edges get the most use, so those get looked at individually before the main clean.
    4 I work the cleaner inBy hand with a soft brush. No heavy machine on your fabric, and only as much liquid as it actually needs.
    5 I pull it back outThe dirt and the soap come out together, so nothing sticky is left behind to attract new dirt.
    6 I check it with youWe look at it together before I pack up. If a patch isn't right, I do it again while I'm still there.

    Spot treatment and deodouriser are included on every job. They are part of the price I give you, not something added on at the end.

    Got something not on the list? Ask me. If it's fabric and it can be cleaned safely, I'll usually take it on. If it can't, I'll say so rather than risk it.

    Every kind of fabric

    Yours gets treated differently

    Sofa fabrics vary far more than carpets do, and what's safe on one will ruin another. That's why I always test a hidden patch first.

    Cotton and linen Comfortable and easily marked

    These take water quickly and can leave a ring if the edges aren't blended properly. I use less liquid and work in sections.

    Velvet and chenille Beautiful, and easy to flatten

    The pile can be crushed or left patchy by the wrong brush. These need a light touch and brushing back the right way afterwards.

    Microfibre The suede-look ones

    Very common and generally hard-wearing, but they can dry with a watermark if the whole panel isn't done evenly.

    Man-made weaves Polyester and blends

    The most forgiving of the lot. These take a proper clean well and usually dry the fastest.

    Delicate fabrics Silk blends and viscose

    These shrink and mark very easily with water. Sometimes the honest answer is that yours shouldn't be wet cleaned at all, and I'll tell you that.

    Not sure? You don't need to know

    Most people have no idea what their sofa is made of, and that's fine. There's usually a label under a cushion, and working it out is my first job when I arrive.

    I don't clean leather. It needs completely different products and a different skill set, so you're better off with someone who specialises in it. Fabric of any kind, I'm happy to look at. And if I don't think yours can be cleaned safely, I'll tell you before I touch it rather than risk ruining a sofa you like.

    The things people ask first

    It depends on how many pieces and what state they're in, so tell me what you have and I'll give you a price. The minimum call-out is £120. You get the full price before I start, and it doesn't change afterwards.

    I pull most of the water back out as I go, so it's hours rather than days. In warmer months a sofa is usually fine by the evening. In cold or damp weather it takes longer, and I'll tell you what to expect before I start.

    Most of them, yes. Some won't, and I'd rather say so up front. Anything that has bleached or dyed the fabric is permanent, and so is sun fading. I'll tell you what I think will shift before I start.

    No. I work around it where it stands, and just need a bit of space to get round the sides. Clearing cushions, throws and anything on the floor beside it helps.
